If you’re like us, you probably wake up every morning, hop up out of bed, and get your swag on. Of course, by “hop up,” we mean blindly reaching for your phone trying to turn off the alarm like a crazed octopus. And by “swag,” we naturally mean drink something with a ton of caffeine. A little research, and we soon found out just how many of us go through the morning struggle between the dark and light side together every day.
The National Coffee Association’s 2016 National Coffee Drinking Trends Report indicates that around 150 million Americans are drinking some 400 million cups of that liquid lifesaver every day. Perhaps even more intriguing is the change in the way coffee is being consumed by people ages 18-39; you know, Millennials. Anyway, nearly 40% of people within that large age group are drinking some kind of blended iced mocha latte specialty coffee on a regular basis. A figure that has doubled since 2008.
In our humble opinion, there are two reasons for this. First, coffee has become hip as hip can be. The Starbucks cup has become an accessory much like a Whole Foods’ or Nordstrom’s bag. It’s a subtle way to humblebrag about your willingness to use your credit card. I see you, playa. The second reason is a little more straightforward. Those things are freaking delicious. Like straight-up no joke delicious. And why wouldn’t they be? Most specialty drinks are basically milkshakes with a bunch of caffeine.
The reason blended coffee drinks are so good is really no secret. Cream, milk, sugar, flavoring, and any number of other things are shoved in there with reckless abandon. We all know that translates directly into fat and calories. Or rather, things that make you wish you’d run more miles when it’s time to strap on the old bathing suit next summer. And that’s not the only bummer. They are also expensive.
Let’s say you hit Starbucks 5 times a week and get a grande mocha frap. You’re looking at a minimum of $30 and almost 2000 extra calories per week. That doesn’t even account for drive time, wait time, and gas. Another fun fact from the aforementioned report is that about 64% of all Americans drink coffee, and they drink 2.7 cups per day on average. So, the reality is that you’re probably hitting some kind of coffee shop 5-10 times a week.
We’ve previously discussed how there is nothing cool about plain homemade drip coffee. Well, there isn’t much cool about waiting in line for some unhealthy expensive nonsense either. It’s for this very reason that we started Brojo Coffee Co. We were tired of the nonsense: the high prices, terrible coffee, long lines, unhealthy drinks, and fillers.
So we did something about it. Pick up a bottle of our Brojo Ice Drip Coffee. It’s only $2.49 per bottle, and each bottle can make two cups of joe.
